If you have been putting off a fresh Linux installation, Fedora 44 might just be the release that gets you to wipe your drive. Red Hat has officially confirmed massive changes to this version. The massive change is the redesigned Anaconda Web UI. We have wrestled with that clunky, hub-and-spoke installer for over a decade. Now it's gone, replaced by a streamlined, four-step web interface that makes deploying Fedora on bare metal feel incredibly modern.

Here is the step-by-step breakdown of how to get Fedora 44 running on your hardware, leveraging the new Btrfs layout and LUKS encryption.

## Prep with Fedora Media Writer

First, download the Fedora 44 ISO. You can use Rufus or BalenaEtcher if you want, but the official Fedora Media Writer remains the most bulletproof way to flash the image. It verifies the downloaded checksum automatically and formats the USB drive correctly for both UEFI and legacy BIOS systems.

- Plug in a USB drive (at least 8GB).
- Open Fedora Media Writer, select Fedora Workstation 44, and choose your target USB.
- Click Write and let it verify.

## Booting into the Anaconda Web UI

Insert the USB into your bare-metal rig, reboot, and hit your menu key. Select the USB drive under the UEFI boot options.

You will see the Fedora boot menu. Use your arrow keys to select Start Fedora-Workstation-Live to skip the media check (since you already verified it in Media Writer) and hit Enter.

Once the live environment loads, click **Install to Hard Drive**. This launches the new Anaconda Web UI in a localized browser window. The flow is strictly linear now, so no more guessing which spoke needs your attention.

### Screen 1: Localization

Select your language and keyboard layout. The UI is clean, reactive, and instantly applies your choices without the old interface lag.

### Screen 2: Storage and Btrfs Layout

This is the best part. Select your target drive. By default, Fedora 44 uses Btrfs. The Web UI abstracts the complexity of subvolumes but still sets up the optimal layout under the hood. It is set to @ for root and @home for user data.

Check the box to Erase all data since you are doing a clean bare-metal install.

Encryption: Do not skip this for a daily driver or homelab node. Toggle Encrypt my data (LUKS2) and enter a strong passphrase. The new UI clearly shows your encryption status before you commit.

### Screen 3: Review and Deploy

The final screen gives you a highly readable summary of your disk layout, user config, and localization. Click **Erase data and install**. The progress bar is much more descriptive now, showing exactly what packages and filesystem tasks are executing.

## **First Boot and Post-Install**

When the installer finishes, hit the Exit to live desktop button and reboot the system from the GNOME system menu. Pull your USB drive out when the screen goes black.

Upon first boot, you will see the LUKS decryption prompt. Enter the passphrase you set during step 2.

After decrypting, the initial GNOME setup wizard runs.

**About You:** Enter your Full Name and Username in the standard local account fields. Do not click on the "Set up Enterprise Login" button. You don't need a domain for a standalone machine.

**Third-Party Repositories:** Click Enable Third-Party Repositories. This gives you immediate access to non-free drivers, media codecs, and software like Google Chrome or Steam.

**Password:** Set your user password.

Click Start Using Fedora Linux.

Once you hit the desktop, open your terminal. The first thing you always do on a fresh bare-metal install is pull the latest updates from the repositories.

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh -y

If there's a kernel or systemd update in the mix, it's good practice to reboot one more time.

sudo systemctl reboot

The new Web UI completely changes the dynamic of deploying Fedora. It is fast, predictable, and removes the friction that used to trip up newcomers, all without taking away the advanced Btrfs and LUKS configurations we rely on. The next time you change your hardware or set up a new system, try using it and experience how much time it saves you.
